Invercargill police are warning bicycle owners after a spate of bike thefts in the city.

A police spokesperson said during the week from February 28 to Match 6, 25 bikes were either taken or unlawfully interfered with in the city.

The bikes ranged from specialised mountain bikes to children's bikes and road bikes.

Police encouraged members of the public who witnessed any suspicious activity, such as a person unlawfully on property, to call 111 and, if possible, provide details such as a a description of the person or people involved, and or a vehicle description and registration.

Bike owners were encouraged to lock garages, or secure their bikes if you could not lock them away, and make sure their property was secured if they went on holiday.

"All thieves are opportunists and will take advantage of any chance you offer them.

"If buying a new bike, the bike shop will record your serial number on their records, so this will always able to be given to police in the event your bike is stolen."

The serial number was found under the bottom bracket (under the pedals).
