Several residents of an Invercargill retirement village were evacuated yesterday after a fire started in one of the units.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand were called to the fire at the Peacehaven Village in Tweed St.

Presbyterian Support Southland chief executive Michael Parker was on site as the fire crews worked to extinguish the fire.

Mr Parker said the fire was located in the roof of a rental unit and the cause was unknown.

Everyone in the block of flats was evacuated after smoke was detected and no-one was injured, Mr Parker said.

"We are glad the systems we have in place worked well and everybody was safe."
