Clutha-Southland MP Hamish Walker had to employ a degree of cunning to get his partner Penny Tipu out of their Warepa house on Wednesday so he could propose.

Mr Walker, who had been all day at the Waimumu Field Days, arrived home to find Ms Tipu cooking dinner and not keen to go for a walk while she was busy.

"I had to come up with something good to get Penny out of the house, so I told a little fib. I said there were sheep loose on the road and we had to check the boundary fence."

The couple then headed out on to the farm to check the boundary fence and after a short while, Mr Walker dropped to one knee and proposed.

"She made me the happiest man alive," he said yesterday.

"Penny was shocked, as she was still looking for sheep on the road."

The couple went back into the house to share a bottle of wine before Mr Walker continued his "Fitbit steps" for the Diabetes Challenge.

The wedding date will be announced later.
