Personal best in first games ‘really good’

Jackson Atkinson (14) was delighted to record a personal best in the discus at the South Island Colgate Games in Invercargill yesterday.

The Canterbury athlete threw 20m on the first day of the games at Surrey Park.

"I’m very happy. This is the first time I’ve ever thrown the discus over 18m."

He is taking part in the competition for the first time.

"I just came to have fun but this is really good."

A total of 827 entries, mostly from throughout the South Island, have been received for the three-day event .

Athletes aged 7 to 14 are competing in disciplines including long jump, high jump and running.
