A person had to be cut from a car after sustaining critical injuries in a crash in Southland early today.
Emergency services were alerted to the single-vehicle crash on State Highway 99, at Round Hill near Colac Bay, at 12.54am, a Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said.
The person was cut from car after about 50 minutes and was taken to Southland Hospital by ambulance.
A police spokeswoman this afternoon said the person was ''critically injured'', said the serious crash unit was investigating.
Another occupant of the crashed vehicle was able to leave the car unaided and may have received only minor injuries.
The Otautau Volunteer Fire Brigade rescue tender and the Riverton Volunteer Fire Brigade appliance attended the crash, the spokesman said.
