No 'jumping up in the air' for lucky Lotto winners from Catlins

Their bank balance will soon have more than a few extra digits, but a Lotto-winning Catlins couple say the experience has yet to sink in.

The 78-year-old and 83-year-old retirees bought their ticket from Balclutha New World but missed the draw on the television because they were watching a rugby match on another channel.

They did not realise they had won $5 million from Powerball and a $333,333 share of Lotto first division until they read the front page of the Otago Daily Times on Monday.

"The screeches started coming out then," she said.

Despite being "rapt" about the win, they could "not really believe it.

"I know it's a heck of a lot of money, and we should be over the moon, but it's taking a while to sink in."

The couple had not bought anything special yet, nor did they have any grand plans, but with seven children, they intended to share it around the family.

The long-time Lotto players had prevously only won small amounts of money. .

"We've only had a few in the 20s or 30s before. We are still talking about it, but not jumping up in the air."
