The Southland Masonic Centre in Invercargill has been sold to a North Island company.

The category 1 heritage building was put up for sale last November after being owned by the Invercargill masons since 1926.

Southland Real Estate Ltd agent Graeme Ridder said a religious group based in Tauranga bought the property, but he declined to comment on the amount paid or name the group.

The Forth St building would be used ''with the same intent that has been used before'', he said.

The complex was the home for the Southern Farmers Market on Sunday mornings and was also hired out for private functions such as weddings and birthday parties.

An assessment of the building provided to the Invercargill City Council said the building was an example of a high-quality classical Greek revival design and was possibly the grandest lodge in New Zealand.
