The dairy attendant took Monday off work to recover from the shock of being robbed about 6.30pm by a masked male.
The offender left the store, heading east towards Ness St on foot with pouches of tobacco, cigarettes and cash.
Sources told the Otago Daily Times that the offender had used a ceremonial-type sword to intimidate the attendant into handing over the store’s cash and tobacco products.
Neighbours, as well as the tenants living in the shop’s rear and upstairs flats were undisturbed by the event.
Police were reviewing footage obtained from the store and neighbour’s security cameras.
Store owner, Murray Baird, also owner of the Rugby Park Dairy, was not available for comment.
Police would also like to hear from anyone who witnessed the robbery on Crinan St on Sunday evening.
Sources said it was not the first time the store had been targeted by thieves.
One neighbour said it was the first time they had been aware of any trouble at the store since they had been living in the area for the past couple of years.
While they were not home when the robbery took place, it had come as no surprise as they had noticed the city had been experiencing a sudden increase in criminal activity and wondered if the events were linked.
