The Christmas spirit was all over Invercargill at the weekend — and one mother took the opportunity to introduce her baby son to the man at the centre of it all.

On Saturday, Katie Herman took 5-month-old Leo to the City Centre Christmas Festival and Market at Esk St, where he met Santa Claus.

The mother of five said her favourite thing about the Christmas holiday period was having all her family together.

"This will be the first Christmas for Leo and the kids are so excited. He is our only boy, so it is pretty special this year."

The weekend event had roving fairies, face painting and live performances, while local market stalls offered handmade gifts.

Children were entertained by Milly Bea with hula hoops and activities.

Siblings Baxter (5) and Poppy (7) Tamaviki wore their themed shirts.

Baxter said his favourite Christmas tradition was opening presents.

"I love getting toys."
