The love of acceleration and speed drew competitors and spectators to the Lawrence quarter-mile on Saturday.
Although dubbed the ''Lawrence quarter-mile drags'', the event is actually a sprint, as each car races 402m (440 yards) down the Wetherstons straight in a bid to clock up the fastest time.
About 900 speed enthusiasts gathered along the spectator bank for the annual event.
Lawrence Car Club president Bill Bazley said that while spectator and driver numbers were down this year due to the Otago Rally and other events, the sprints were still a success.
''It was an absolutely brilliant day.''
The 9.4sec record set about six years ago remained unbeaten, with Eric Eaves, of Gore, clocking the fastest time of the day - 10.48sec, winning him the open V8 section.
The event ran smoothly with Christchurch man Andrew Burnett the only crash of the day after he spun out of control in his Holden VX Commodore and had to be towed free from a fence.
Senior Constable Robert Wallace, of Lawrence, said the crowd was well-behaved and gave police no trouble.
All money raised at the event goes to local services - ambulance, fire service and hospital.
