About three fire appliances, a police car and a St John’s ambulance backed a team of almost 80 volunteers for last Thursday’s Toot4Tucker collection day.

Sirens signalled the arrival of the runners and collectors in the streets of Balclutha, Kaitangata and Stirling for the third local food drive for the donation of non-perishable food items by the public.

It was the second Toot4Tucker overseen by Clutha Budget Advisory Service (CBAS).

"We’re very grateful to Lions, Inner Wheel, emergency services and all the volunteers and community groups who make it possible," CBAS financial adviser Amy Senada said.

"I’d say we received a similar volume of donations as last year but this was the best organised with notification and volunteer co-ordination.

"What was interesting was there was more variety this year, like people were mindful of the time of year and having quite thoughtful Christmas ideas."

She said the budget advisory service was helping about the same number of clients as last year and the team’s professional experience had developed into rigorous vetting criteria to manage capacity based on need and effort.

As well as managing Clutha Food Hub, CBAS manages the Happy Feet school shoes programme, teaches financial literacy and facilitates the wraparound support of other social agencies.
