Two Balclutha primary school principals and a second-year teacher have won Asia:NZ scholarships to visit Singapore and Korea.

Balclutha Primary School principal Paddy Ford and Rosebank Primary School principal Chris Morris have each won one of 10 annual scholarships and will travel to Singapore for one week, while Balclutha Primary School second-year teacher Christine Harrington will travel to Korea for three weeks in July.

Mr Ford and Mr Morris agree their roles are to make children aware of the wider world and its influence on them.

Mr Ford said this trip was about raising the principals' awareness of what was happening in Asia, so they, in turn, could raise the awareness of teachers. Balclutha Primary was running a study on Asia, and children were learning the clothes they wore, the TV they watched and the cars they were driven around in are all likely to come from Asia.

Mr Morris said Asia was an economic powerhouse.

"Whether we like it or not, we are connected and we have to prepare children for life in that climate," he said.

Miss Harrington will attend a series of university lectures and field trips during the Korean Studies Workshop in Seoul.

This trip was not just about teaching children to live in an Asian-dominated economic climate, but was also about stopping racism and making society more inclusive, she said.
