Six60 to swing by in time for anniversary

It is a great first birthday present.

Six60 are coming to Balclutha and will perform in the town almost a year to the day since the new Te Pou ō Mata-Au (TPŌMA) centre in Balclutha was opened.

Two concerts from the band will take place in the centre on August 31, with 750 tickets on sale for each concert.

The $25 million centre was opened in August 26 last year and not many on that day would have envisaged Six60 playing so soon at the venue.

The concert was awarded to Balclutha after a voting contest, which had the Clutha town up against four towns from the North Island: Whangarei, Palmerston North, Rotorua and Raglan.

Six60 had played a series of concerts in small towns in April and May and decided to play one more in another town.

Balclutha won out in what was a close race, beating Palmerston North by 2%, getting 33% of the vote. Rotorua received 16%, Whangarei 11% and Raglan 9%.

Te Pou ō Mata-Au director Mary Woodrow said the concert was great for the centre.

"We are delighted Balclutha won the vote for one more show on Six60’s Grassroots Tour," she said.

"The week of the concerts is one year since the opening of TPŌMA ... this is an amazing way to celebrate our first anniversary.

"We were up against cities with a larger population than Balclutha, so it just goes to show what our community can achieve when we put our minds to it."

Six60 was promising a very special show in Balclutha.

Tickets go on sale at the end of next week.
