Kaitangata Pistol Club secretary-treasurer Ruth ''Ruthless'' Barnett takes a shot during the South Island Cowboy Action Championships at the weekend.

The four-day championships attracted 42 competitors.

Mrs Barnett said the weekend was ''fantastic''.

''With the native birdlife they could hear, they'd never been to a club like that before.''

The first, second and third placed overall winners in the 12-stage competition were Jake ''Lightning Jack'' Findlayson, Stephen ''Reverend'' Rush and Phillip ''PJ'' Brett.

Mrs Barnett said the competitors were a great bunch of people.

The club was ''very lucky'' with the weather which remained sunny over the weekend.

The South Island Championships will be held in Alexandra next year.
