Environmental education and performing arts combined to create Rosebank School’s Worlds of Wearable Art show last week.

With the help of teaching staff and family, about 70 children aged 5 to 7 used unwanted materials to create costumes on the themes of Pasifika World, Underwater World and Out of this World.

The pupils delivered two song and dance shows for audiences of about 100 in South Otago High School’s assembly hall.

"We were learning about reducing and recycling waste and thought ‘what better way to put learning into practice than looking round the the school for things we don’t use any more and making costumes out of them’," teacher Jaqui Clark said.

"We’ve been preparing most of the term ... It didn’t start out to be as big as this and it has become quite a production."

Hula dancers, marine creatures and aliens finished up their afternoon show with high spirits to fuel their evening encore.
