Police in Balclutha observed Police Remembrance Day for the first time this week.
Staff shared a moment of silence on Thursday to remember the 32 officers who have been killed on duty in New Zealand and the 40 officers and employees who have died as a result of police work since 1886.
Senior Sergeant Alistair Dickie said staff also wanted to use the occasion to remember Pauline Burrows, a staff member at the Balclutha station for 32 years, who died of cancer two years ago.
"We still feel the loss of Pauline as she was taken far too early," Snr Sgt Dickie said.
Similar services were held around New Zealand, including Queenstown and Dunedin, as September 29 is recognised as the feast day of the Archangel Michael, the patron saint of police.
Snr Sgt Dickie said that there was always a risk for frontline police staff in their work and it was important not to become complacent.
