A 35-year-old Clydevale man is in a stable condition in Dunedin Hospital after being stabbed eight times during an alcohol-fuelled incident in Inch Clutha, near Kaitangata, early on Saturday.
Balclutha Sergeant Martin Bull said the incident occurred about 12.45am after an argument developed at a Guy Fawkes night party.
A 29-year-old Kaitangata man allegedly punched at least one female before her partner, the stabbing victim, intervened.
He was stabbed seven times to the upper torso and once to the face with a pocket knife.
At some stage, the alleged offender was hit over the head with a vacuum cleaner pipe, Sgt Bull said.
The alleged offender's partner tried to stop the fight and received a stab wound to her elbow, Sgt Bull said.
The victim was taken to hospital by ambulance and underwent surgery on Saturday morning.
He was reportedly in a stable condition.
The alleged offender and his partner also received treatment at the hospital.
The alleged offender was placed under guard and taken into custody.
He would appear in the Dunedin District Court today charged with causing grievous bodily harm, Sgt Bull said.
Further charges of wounding with intent and male assaults female were likely.
Sgt Bull praised the work of St John and Clutha Health First staff in dealing with "some intoxicated and unruly patients".
