A former Olympic competitor will be one of hundreds of people competing in a special Mother's Day fun run in Balclutha.

Olympic track cyclist Matt Randall, who competed as part of the New Zealand men's team pursuit at the 2004 Athens Olympics, will take part in the Mother's Day Fun Run and Walk on May 14, at the Balclutha Showgrounds.

The fun run will take place in 23 places across the country.

The six-time annual event supports the ''Heart Foundation for Women'' campaign which aims to improve the heart health of New Zealand women.

More than 5000 participants have already registered for the event.

Jennian Homes partnered with the New Zealand Olympic Committee to help 42 Olympians take part in the runs.

Every Olympian taking part will wear a shirt specially designed by New Zealand artist Dick Frizzell.

More than 7000 people took part last year in the fun run and walk which was the largest crowd entered to date.

The Olympians entered will be active across the country at all 23 locations, helping co-ordinate warm-ups and some will also take part in the 5km course.
