The owner-manager of Lochlea Books has decided to close the store for personal reasons and admits it will be a sad experience when the "last page of the book" is complete.
A life-long love of books was behind her move in 1994 to set up the store, which is named after a farm once owned by Scottish writer Robert Burns.
The absence of a second-hand book store between Mosgiel and Invercargill was also a factor that led to the venture, which has seen her trade in tens of thousands of books and meet book lovers from all over the world.
"I've always read books, always loved books, so I guess it made sense to open a store with books."
The central Balclutha store will close in mid-November, meaning Miss Dix has just a few weeks to try to clear the thousands of titles still in the store.
"If anyone is looking for some titles to complete a collection of a certain author's works, then they should come in," she said.
The store also boasts a massive collection of romantic novels, especially the popular Mills and Boon range.
An avid reader, Miss Dix particularly likes thrillers but "could never get into" westerns or horrors.
Her favourite authors are fiction writers Diana Gabaldon and Sara Donati.
