Drunk teens a problem

Residents of Kaka Point have had enough of youth binge-drinking during the holiday season.

Kaka Point Community Group events manager Lisa Lyall said this week that last year children were turning up at the beach with alcohol and no adult supervision from about 2pm.

"Last year, young kids were dropped off with alcohol, and I mean young kids, anywhere from 13 or 14, with no adult supervision."

Ms Lyall said large groups of teenagers would congregate along the beach and roads around the town.

"There would be a group of them that would stand in the middle of the road, and they wouldn't move even if you were driving."

Balclutha constable Tom Taylor said police dealt with about 30 people last year in alcohol-related incidents at Kaka Point.

"If you are under the age of 18, you are not legally allowed to drink . . . even if you are with older people."

This year, police will be issuing under-age drinkers with a $200 fine, or they may be summonsed to appear in court, or arrested.

"Not a great way to spend a holiday," Const Taylor said.

Anyone caught supplying alcohol to teenagers could be fined up to $2000.
