Two people were flown to Dunedin Hospital by rescue helicopter after a two-car collision on Clutha Valley Rd west of Balclutha yesterday, just before 4pm.

The drivers of a Nissan utility and a Ford Fairmont were flown by Otago Regional Rescue Helicopter to Dunedin Hospital, while the passenger of the utility was taken by ambulance to Clutha Health First, in Balclutha.

Constable Murray Hewitson, of Owaka, said the two drivers had moderate injuries.

The female driver of the utility had possible internal injuries, while the male driver of the Fairmont had possible back injuries.

The status of the utility passenger was not known.

"Early indications are the driver of the [Ford] has lost control on the bend and crossed the centre line," Const Hewitson said.

The road between Mt Maitland Rd and Smith's Track was closed for about 30 minutes while emergency services freed the occupants from their cars.
