The combined winner of Clutha District Council’s Youth Spirit Community Services Award was Anna Harrex, of Lawrence.

Anna’s commitment to community was evident in her recent Cook Strait-distance pool swim to fundraise for cancer.

Her feat was supported by the Lawrence Area School and community, showcasing her ability to unite and inspire.

Playing and coaching netball and swimming locally, and recognised as a senior swimming and athletics champion for three consecutive years, Anna balances her interests with employment and active participation in a youth programme.

The deputy head girl at Lawrence Area School has demonstrated her respect for education by achieving academic awards in 2021, 2022, and 2023, and aspires to achieve a level 3 endorsement and the prestigious title of dux, with plans to apply to study a bachelor of teaching.

"Anna is a role model and ambassador within the community, known for her approachable and kind nature," a council spokesperson said.

"Her leadership style is inspiring, and she has formed great friendships and demonstrated resilience by attending the leadership programme at Akaroa and completing a three-week Outward Bound course, which pushed her boundaries both physically and mentally."

Anna was quick to thank her parents, family and school.

"They definitely support me in what I say I want to do," she said.

"When I said I wanted to do the swim they were asking ‘what do we need to do to make it happen?’ and my PE teacher Mrs Murray made a training programme and helped me through it and it wouldn’t have happened without her.

"I’ve learned who encourages me ... when I achieve things and suggest more things for me to try ... You should ask for and take on any advice you can get from those kind of people."

Anna’s motivated approach to life, combined with her leadership, academic excellence and community spirit, have inspired both students and the wider community.
