Clutha River being monitored

Civil Defence staff continue their work in South Otago as it enters clean-up mode after heavy flooding.

Water levels across the district and river flows were dropping on Sunday morning, and no further rain was forecast.

The Clutha District Council said it continued to monitor the Kaitangata Mouth of the Clutha River after a channel was cleared on Saturday night to help water flow out.

The council said staff  were available to do assessments of flooded properties, once it was safe to do so, but there may be a wait as they worked their way through the list.

Service centres in Owaka, Balclutha, Milton and Lawrence were closed.

Water warnings

Due to the heavy rain and flooding, the council said residents on Rural Water Schemes Balmoral 1, Balmoral 2, Tuapeka and Glenkenic need to conserve water as treatment plants and schemes would be under pressure.

This also applied to the Milton township.

There had been sewerage overflows around Milton and all flood waters should be considered contaminated as a precaution.

Customers on rural water schemes that may have ongoing issues due to the rain, would be advised via the council's text message service.

Roads affected

Drivers still need to take care on all roads and be vigilant for any road damage or debris from flood waters. There may also be ice.

Slip clearing work is being done on SH1 (Mosgiel to Milton) just south of the Waihola township on Sunday.

There is a stop/go traffic management in place with a 30km/h temporary speed limit. Road users were advised to stop on request.

SH1 (Balclutha to Milton) had reopened after flooding. There was a temporary speed restriction of 50km/h in place near the intersection with Moneymore Rd. Road users should take extra care

A number of local roads remained closed on Sunday morning. The council advised this was not a complete list, as the situation continued to be updated.

    Summerhill Road
    Cross Road - Kelso
Fallaburn Road - open with care.
Kelso-Wooded Hill area including Cross Road.
Koi Flat Road - please avoid
    Waitahuna Gully
    Wangaloa Road
    Coast Road, Kaitangata
    Toko Mouth Road
    Berwick Road
    Circle Hill Road
Cullen Hill Road slip to be assessed when Finlayson Road opens (it is currently closed).

There would be damage to the roading network and the council was aware some culverts had been washed out and would need to be renewed.

Civil Defence would be out and about checking some of the flood-affected areas on Sunday.
