Papatowai and District Community Association secretary Ian Morrison spoke to the Clutha District Council about improving a small area on the south side of the Papatowai Bridge.
It was an area that had the potential to be ''beautified'' in some way.
The association had discussed ideas at a meeting and contacted the council to see if it was possible.
He was unsure how exactly the area could be improved but some suggested ideas included picnic tables and clearing an area for cars to park.
However, Mr Morrison said there were some traffic constraints for a parking area.
Part of the motivation for improving the area was the fact it had an ''iconic'' view of the Tahakopa estuary.
''It seems like an opportunity for one of those classic Catlins views, to make a feature of it,'' he said.
Mr Morrison believed it could be enhanced in some way that did not conflict with the traffic and still provide an area for people to enjoy the ''beautiful view''.
Council infrastructure strategy manager Russell Bond said a safety assessment had been initiated for the proposal.
Options for the area might need to be limited to pedestrian access only.
Once a safety assessment was completed and the group had a more formal plan, it could be considered as part of the council's long term and annual plans.
