3 injured in Catlins crash

A woman  in her 20s is in a serious condition and two others moderately injured after a crash in the Catlins tonight.

Police said emergency services were called to the crash south of Owaka on the Papatowai Highway near the border between Otago and Southland at 8.22pm after a vehicle left the road and hit a tree.

There was ice on the road in the area of the crash and police had contacted the Clutha District Council about putting grit down on the road.

It was too early to determine the cause of the crash and whether it was related to the ice.

A St John ambulance spokesman said a woman in her 20s was in a serious condition being airlifted to Dunedin Hospital.

Two other patients with moderate injuries were being taken to Dunedin Hospital by ambulance.
