A $20,000 budget has been provisionally approved for a mural to be painted on the Tuapeka Gold Print building as part of the Lawrence streetscape upgrade.
Lawrence-Tuapeka Community Board member and Clutha district councillor Geoff Blackmore said there was some discussion among board members at Wednesday's meeting about the merits of the mural, which would depict a group of miners.
"There were mixed feelings about where it should be done, if at all, and what size it should be.
"We have approved a budget on the proviso that more public consultation is made and the size of the mural is confirmed," Cr Blackmore said.
Mural artist Doug Ayson, of Alexandra, assessed the wall of the Tuapeka Gold Print building on Ross Pl in June, and advised the Lawrence-Tuapeka Community Board that - including travel, art preparation, paint and GST, but excluding undercoat - the price would be between $100 and $150 per square metre.
Cr Blackmore acknowledged the smaller the mural, the cheaper it would be, and he expressed concern that a full-wall mural might pose a distraction to people driving through Lawrence.
