A WorkSafe spokesman confirmed it was notified about the incident, but would not investigate further.
‘‘After completing our initial inquiries we understand that the incident took place on a private property and work was not taking place at the time. We therefore won’t be taking any further actions at this stage.’’
The man’s name and age have yet to be formally released.
Waimate Mayor Craig Rowley, who knew the man well, told the Otago Daily Times yesterday that news of the death came as a shock to him and others in Waimate.
‘‘He was fantastic. He was a nice guy who would do anything for you,’’ he said.
‘‘Our condolences go out to the family of the gentleman that was killed ... It’s a very upsetting time for them.’’
A family member of the man contacted by the Otago Daily Times declined to comment.
The incident happened on private property near Timaru Rd, between Deep Creek Rd and Champions Rd.
Police were notified of the incident at 5.15pm, a spokesman said.
Fire and ambulance services also attended the scene.
The death will be referred to the coroner.
