Woman 'forced to withdraw cash from ATM'

Timaru police are appealing for witnesses to an alleged attempted robbery near Ranui Ave on Monday.

After police received a series of reports of a woman being forced to withdraw cash from a Northtown Mall ATM about 6pm, police enquiries led to the arrest of a 29-year-old man and 38-year-old woman nearby.

Both have been charged with demands to menace.

The alleged offenders left the scene empty-handed when members of the public intervened, police said.

Constable Kane Whiteley, of Timaru, said police ‘‘still need the public’s help to piece together the full circumstances of the incident’’.

The man has been remanded in custody and the woman has been remanded on bail.

The pair are due to reappear in the Timaru District Court on December 10.
