The fire covered about 50 hectares and State Highway 80, the Mount Cook road, was closed while crews worked to put it out.
The road was partially reopened about 7.30am today, to allow people stranded at Mount Cook village to leave.
A Fenz spokesperson said drivers should expect delays and poor visibility due to smoke.
Four properties, two of which were vacant, were evacuated as a precaution on Monday night.
The two affected owners would meet the incident controller today, Fenz said.
A helicopter and heavy machinery have this morning joined ground crews to try contain the fire.
The fire died down overnight but there were at least 10 hectares where flames were still ripping through wilding pines, grass and slash piles.
Eight fire trucks were at the scene yesterday evening, with a team of about 40 firefighters tackling the blaze.
A Twizel resident said she could see the flames from about 10 kilometres away.
