South Canterbury piper William McArthur has qualified for one of the most prestigious bagpipe events in the country.

The Colin Craig Claidhmor is held annually and participants can compete only through qualifying, and then receiving an invitation.

The rankings show Mr McArthur is the 17th top solo bagpiper in the country, and at the claidhmor he will be competing against current judges and people he is being tutored by.

Mr McArthur said he was chuffed to have received the invitation and it was nice to know that a lot of his hard work over the last couple years was starting to be acknowledged.

The event will be held in Palmerston North in May and will be livestreamed across the world.

Mr McArthur is the current pipe major of the South Canterbury Highland Pipe Band.

Drum sergeant Tiffany Gilchrist said South Canterbury should be proud of Mr McArthur.

"Not just the band but also the South Canterbury region is incredibly lucky to have someone who can play the bagpipes up to this standard."

Mr McArthur tutors privately around South Canterbury region as well as running the band.

"I owe a lot of the opportunities I’m now getting to the South Canterbury band where I have played since I was 9.

"The band allowed me to learn and grow through many opportunities.

"It’s great to be able to represent it at such a high level."
