Used wire rope is wanted to be recycled for flood protection, including along the Waitaki River.
Environment Canterbury's river works depot at Temuka is looking for new sources.
Every year it used thousands of metres of wire rope for river protection work throughout South Canterbury, depot supervisor Paul Eddy said.
Most of the larger diameter wire rope was sourced from fishing and forestry companies but smaller rope from old irrigators was also welcome.
"We are keen to be able to recycle this wire for use on river protection works such as groynes, anchoring trees and layering. We can even make use of shorter lengths, one or two metres long, that might otherwise just go to waste."
Mr Eddy said it was an ideal way to put recycling principles into action.
Anyone with wire rope to spare can contact Mr Eddy at the Temuka Environment Canterbury works depot.
