An innovative development, understood to be a world first, will be unveiled at Mt Hutt skifield when it opens on Saturday.

NZSki chief executive James Coddington said the company had made a "significant" investment in covering its new magic carpet - with old containers from ships.

Thirteen containers had been adapted to cover the length of the magic carpet, with windows and LCD screens added.

The development meant the area would be protected from heavy wind and snow, he said.

"When we have high winds and lots of snow it takes a day to dig out.

"After heavy snow we generally have to close the next day.

"Now, it's all protected from that."

Mr Coddington said he was at the skifield on Tuesday and described it as "phenomenal skiing".

Mt Hutt had a base yesterday of just over 1m, with skiing and boarding on the opening day expected to be "from top to bottom".

"The Triple won't be open, but everything else will be."

For those at Mt Hutt on opening day, the traditional glass of bubbly would be on offer, along with "a few exciting things" for families and children.
