The latest Bookarama chapter has successfully closed.

The annual fundraiser, run by Rotary Timaru North, was held from Friday to Sunday last week and raised more than $20,000 to go towards local community groups.

Convener Dale Davey said she was pleased with how the fundraiser went.

"We had about a quarter of an hour lull at 3.15pm on Friday and that was about it.

"Saturday was steady all day; we made nearly half as much money as we did on Friday and then we still had people knocking on the door after 3 o’clock on Sunday.

"We can only say the success is due to all the great stuff that people from town donate and then the fact they are all prepared to come and buy it all back."

She said $20,000 was more than they had raised in previous years.

"We’re still coming out of the Covid lull but with the quality of the books this year, it did make a difference.

"We tried to be pretty reasonable with our prices so that people could manage the cost. Economic times aren’t that brilliant at the moment."

She was very appreciative of the help of the year 10 students from Timaru Boys’ High School when it came to packing up on Monday.

"We had to clean up the leftovers and the boys came down and helped us stack them all back in the container.

"They were great. We had huge piles of books and boxes to go in and they only took about 20 minutes to do it. They were brilliant."

Thoughts were already on how they could improve next year’s event, she said.

"I’ve got a couple of things up my sleeve.

"I’m happy to stay on as convener — you do need to get two or three years in a row. By the second year you’re starting to be an old hand and then the third you think ‘what am I doing this for?’.

"I’m keen to carry on ... The support from the Rotary guys is so good."
