The awards were announced at a function at the Timaru District Council Chambers on Monday.
The trust received a framed certificate, a trophy and $1500 prize money, and now has the opportunity to represent the district at the 2008 TrustPower National Community Awards, which are being held in March next year.
In total, TrustPower gave away $5000 to various community groups at the ceremony.
Timaru Mayor Janie Annear said volunteers were ‘‘the treasures of our community and priceless beyond measure''.
‘‘They are the foundation of our community and without them we would be lost,'' she said.
TrustPower community relations representative Melanie Gray said the Timaru Festival of Roses allowed broad participation of South Canterbury residents, while providing a springboard for fundraising.
The festival had boosted Timaru's image, showcased some of the region's greatest attractions, while offering many community groups the chance to get involved, Miss Gray said.
The competition for this year's awards was tough, with 30 groups nominated.
