Top Coat Plastering director Tom William and 24/7 Construction director Rory Foley will be sharing their knowledge and answering questions all things DIY next Thursday at Bunnings Timaru.
Mr Foley said the idea for the night was to simply help and educate the community.
"We just thought it would be a really good idea for people that want to know little things that they can do around the house, and just give them little tips and tricks and know-how.
"They can just turn up and if they’ve got bigger questions, or they’re looking at purchasing something, they can actually talk to us. There’s no such thing as a dumb question in our books.
"We want it to just be relaxed so people can come, learn a few things and go from there."
He said there would be a big focus on gib patching.
"We asked a few people what they would like to learn, and without a doubt most people came back saying, ‘how do you patch gib?’.
"So that’s what Tom from Top Coat’s is going to speaking about.
"We’ll also be covering things like how to find a stud, how to put anchors in — to even just hang a picture — and then other stuff like how to put a strop on a trailer or how to put a trailer on a tail hitch.
"It’ll be a lot of little things like that and then small stuff on power tools and what you should have in your toolbox."
Mr Foley said it would be beneficial to able to share some tips and have a discussion around DIY because YouTube is not always the answer.
"YouTube is a bit of a problem sometimes. You could watch a video about patching gib and they’ll say this is the best way to do it and I’ll never have seen someone patch gib like that ever.
"It can be great, don’t get me wrong, but I think there’s a bit of disinformation when it comes to it. A lot of it can be American as well, so that doesn’t always translate here."
The hope was to turn the evening into a more regular event if it is successful, he said.
"We’ll hopefully get a feel of what people want. The idea is to hopefully do different little sessions, like this one might be about gib and power tools but the next is about how to strip varnish off doors and things like that.
"We’ll listen to the feedback and go from there — maybe people would want something on painting.
"It’s really great to have Bunnings on board with us and I’m sure that will help us with furthering this into more little DIY nights."
The night is free to attend, and will also feature refreshments and spot prizes.
It will run from 5pm to 7pm.
