Timaru Suburban Lions and volunteers are calling on locals to donate non-perishable food items at their gate or letterboxes, and listen out for the toot.
Authorised drivers and runners will be collecting donations from 6pm to 7.30pm.
Lions Zone 3 chairwoman Teressa May said in a statement all donations would be distributed to local food banks at Presbyterian Support South Canterbury Family Works, the Salvation Army Timaru and St Vincent de Paul.
"Together, we can make a difference in our community by helping those in need. Dried pasta, rice, toiletries, cereals, noodles and canned goods are especially appreciated. Rain or shine, our team will be out there collecting your generous donations."
The club was grateful to Hato Hone St John Timaru for its support of the project, and for members of the community who donated items for collections, Mrs May said.
For more information or to get involved, contact secretary@timarusuburbanlions.org.nz or follow Timaru Suburban Lions on Facebook for updates and other community projects.
There will be no collections on State Highway 1 streets.
