Bob Darroch is well-known for his Little Kiwi series of books which encourage young readers to lift the flaps and search throughout the story.
Mr Darroch is now working alongside the Temuka Community Board to create a Little Kiwi trail, by adapting a story to make a quest for children in the Temuka Domain.
Organiser Nicola Nimo said the 2km trail, which began at the playground carpark, wound its way through the domain.
"The idea was to offer younger children a path they can ride their bikes on and head out to see parts of the domain they possibly don’t see so regularly."
Mrs Nimo said parts of the path would be sealed while other parts would be constructed out of crusher dust.
She said the trail allowed the children opportunities for "pit stops" along the way to read the story and search the surrounding area.
"We were extremely fortunate and grateful Bob agreed to work with us on this project and to adapt his story and illustrate accordingly," she said.
Besides Little Kiwi, the artwork would feature another regular character from Mr Darroch’s original Little Kiwi collection.
"So make sure you look at the artwork carefully and see if you can spot who it is."
While the trail had its origins as a track for young children, Mrs Nimo felt it was perfect for all ages, and it tied in nicely with some of the other paths that were also under construction in the domain.
All going well the trail will be ready for use early next month.
An official opening celebration and activities are being considered for spring.
