Almost $190K given to community

Nearly $200,000 of grants to help organisations with operational costs was distributed throughout Mid and South Canterbury late last month.

The Community Trust of Mid & South Canterbury received 52 applications totalling $590,057, and 36 were successful, resulting in total grant funding of $189,023 for the round.

In the Timaru District, grants totalling $55,900 were awarded, including:

  • $10,000 to South Canterbury Hospice for running costs;
  • $7500 to Presbyterian Support South Canterbury for their Family Works counselling service;
  • $7500 to He Manawa Titi Youth Trust towards rent for the Timaru Youth Collective after-school programme;
  • $7500 to Hato Hone St John for the Aoraki Health Shuttle;
  • $6900 to Athletics SC All-Weather track Trust towards the costs of the New Zealand South Island secondary schools track and field championships;
  • $5000 to Citizens Advice South Canterbury for operational costs;
  • $5000 to Table Tennis South Canterbury for a junior development programme;
  • $2500 to Athletics New Zealand/Run Timaru for the 2024 NZ 10km Road Championships;
  • $2000 to Good Bitches Baking for their Baking it Better Timaru programme;
  • $2000 to West End Croquet Club for grounds maintenance.

In the Mackenzie District $6800 was awarded — $5000 towards the Fairlie Kids Club and $1800 to New Zealand Deerstalkers Association for their predator programme.

The Waimate Parenting Hub was granted $6000 to help with rent and running costs, and the Waimate Theatre Company’s youth production of Frozen was given a guarantee against loss of $2500.

Funding for regional services included:

  • $40,750 to Anxiety NZ Trust;
  • $7500 to Multiple Sclerosis South Canterbury for operational costs;
  • $7500 to the Pinc and Steel Cancer Rehabilitation Foundation;
  • $5000 to the Stroke Foundation for Community Navigator Service Delivery;
  • $2750 for Helpline running costs;
  • $5000 to Cholmondeley Children’s Centre for respite care for children from the Mid and South Canterbury Region;
  • $3000 to Motor Neurone Disease NZ towards salary support for their community support adviser;
  • $2000 to Parents Centre Aotearoa for Parenting Education Programmes;
  • $5000 to Presbyterian Support (Northern) for the Lifeline service;
  • $3000 to WanderSearch Charitable Trust to cover overheads.
