Welfare agency contacts 65 more foreign nationals

Another 65 foreign nationals in Queenstown seeking welfare assistance have been contacted by Emergency Management Otago.

The total yesterday afternoon stood at 2160 contacted from the 4300 who requested help because of Covid-19, up from 2095 late on Friday afternoon.

Work to contact those in need began on April 24.

Requests came from a wide range of nationalities, including more than a hundred each from India, the United Kingdom and the Philippines.

The emergency agency has been assisted by 120 volunteers from the public and private sector throughout Otago and Southland.

Many would have already received help from Queenstown’s Emergency Operations Centre, which has responded to 10,800 calls itself.

The regional agency intended to put people in contact with their Government, as well as address welfare needs, employment status and intention to stay in the country.

Information collected would be shared with Queenstown-Lakes District Council and various government departments.
