AJ Hackett Bungy NZ — which celebrates its 36th birthday next month — has been given the nod by Queenstown’s council to build the Kawarau Swing, expected to be operational by next July and, as part of the development, plant at least 2000 natives along the northern face of the Kawarau Gorge.
The new attraction, to be located on the southern banks of the gorge, near the existing Kawarau Bungy Centre, will offer single, tandem or three-person rides, enabling guests to swing 30-35m high across the river, before being winched back up to the platform.
Bungy NZ co-founder and managing director Henry van Asch says the addition of the swing is "significant", and it will further enrich Queenstown’s world-class adventure tourism offering.
"The Kawarau Swing adds a new level of personal challenge to the bungy and zipline at the Kawarau Bungy Centre."
Bungy NZ chief executive David Mitchell says the swing launch zone will be adjacent to the existing bungy viewing platform, affording spectators a "prime view" of all the action.
