Upper Clutha Tramping Club members have joined a groundswell of opposition to the Government's proposal to open areas of the conservation estate for mining.
The club recently indicated its opposition a proposal to remove some protected conservation areas from schedule four of the Crown Minerals Act.
Club chairman Warren Sutton said Upper Clutha trampers were against any moves to open the conservation estate for mining.
The Government has identified areas in the Paparoa National Park, parts of the Coromandel, and some of Great Barrier Island, which could have their protected status under schedule four.
Mr Sutton said the club agreed with statements from the Parliamentary Commissioner stating that public conservation land should remain held in trust for the benefit of all New Zealanders.
