Destination Queenstown (DQ) will ask the Queenstown Lakes District Council for a $900,000 funding boost from the tourism promotion levy for the next financial year.

About 150 members voted at a special meeting in Queenstown yesterday morning on the application - DQ needed 75% of return votes in support to progress.

It received 79.3%.

The regional tourism organisation will now make a submission to the council to request its core funding be increased from $3.6million this financial year to $4.5million next year.

Its funding in subsequent years would revert to the normal annual incremental increase determined by the council.

Yesterday Destination Queenstown chief executive Graham Budd said he was pleased that, subject to final approval, the organisation would ''be able to deliver the kind of services and activity that our businesses and community deserve''.

Mr Budd said about $180,000 had been allocated to better understand Queenstown's visitor markets through research and data.

''We need to understand, for example, what motivates visitors to come to Queenstown; what barriers there might be for them coming here; what their experience is like when they're here, so we can help develop our marketing activity, as well as inform our community.

''We haven't had the funding to do that ... it's really been a gap, not only for us from a marketing perspective but ... in terms of helping us inform our community better.''

The balance of the additional funding would be used to increase DQ's investment in Australian market activity, domestic shoulder season marketing and the Queenstown Winter Festival.

Mr Budd said the organisation agreed to the 75% threshold of support so the council could have ''strong confidence'' the request was supported by DQ members.

A year ago DQ members voted against a proposal to increase funding 10% over three years after failing to reach the 75% threshold.

Destination Queenstown would now make a submission as part of the annual plan process and Mr Budd said he was ''confident that it will get endorsed''.

If approved, the new funding would come into effect from July 1.
