The Queenstown Events Centre will add a cafe to its premises by the end of this month after established cafe operator the Tin Goose successfully tendered to operate at the site.

Lakes Leisure's call for tenders followed feedback from the community that a cafe would be a welcome addition to the facility.

Lakes Leisure chief executive Fiona McKissock said several high-quality tenders were received and considered before the decision was made.

"The quality of applicants was of a really high standard, but the Tin Goose stood out when it came to ticking all of our boxes.

"We know they are a popular choice with the community, serve high quality, healthy food and their existing operation at nearby Terrace Junction will ensure the cafe will always be efficiently managed.

"If we can further contribute to the wellbeing of the community by offering people some healthy eating choices while they are here, then that's fantastic.

"People at the centre are usually busy getting active and keeping fit without a lot of spare time, so it's nice to be able to offer them the convenience of some good and easy food options on site," she said.

The cafe would be located in the main foyer of the Events Centre with capacity for indoor and outdoor seating.

Tin Goose owner Alister Watson said the number of overall visitors to the Events Centre was continually increasing and with more than 320,000 people coming to the centre for the year to June 30, 2010, the cafe expected to be busy.

"There's huge potential for us at the Events Centre and when we are already preparing good, healthy food for our existing Frankton cafe, managing an additional outlet nearby seemed like a perfect way for us to expand our business while solving Lakes Leisure's need for a cafe on site.

"We intend to have the cafe open seven days a week and although there is plenty of seating, we will focus on quick and easy take-away options.

"We are really looking forward to getting the cafe up and running and are pretty sure we will see some of our regulars at our new spot at the Events Centre.

"I think the parents will welcome the chance to grab a coffee while they're there with the kids," Mr Watson said.
