All 163 year 11 pupils at Wakatipu High School had an unexpected day off yesterday as 39 of the school's 50 teachers took industrial action.
School deputy principal Grant Adolph said the 39 teachers taking part in the industrial action were in classes teaching, except when year 11 pupils were timetabled. When a year 11 class arrived, teachers made themselves unavailable to carry out their duties.
Post Primary Teachers' Association (PPTA) members on staff were following instructions from the association's national executive after a "breakdown in communications regarding the secondary teachers' collective agreement" with the Ministry of Education, Mr Adolph said.
The industrial action came after the "rostering off" of all 128 pupils in year 9 at the high school on Wednesday.
Mr Adolph said no pupils were scheduled to be rostered off today.
However, proposed PPTA action included rostering home all 147 pupils in year 10 on Wednesday.
