The Treble Cone Ski Area hopes to open for the season on Saturday, more than three weeks after its due date.

General manager marketing and sales Sophie Luther said late yesterday afternoon that snow was falling on the top and middle portions of the field but it had not, at that point, reached the base building.

She expected snow to fall to lower levels overnight and a second cold front is expected to produce more snow tonight.

The MetService is predicting snow at Treble Cone until tomorrow.

Cardrona Alpine Resort had a good fall of snow yesterday morning and staff were expecting more to follow.

Queenstown skifields were left out in the cold yesterday, when a predicted weather bomb failed to bring anything other than light snow flurries and rain.

Coronet Peak was closed yesterday because of high winds.

However, the Remarkables opened and ski area manager Ross Lawrence said he was hopeful eager skiers and boarders would wake up to fresh snow this morning.

"It's still coming out of the nor-nor'west. Until it turns around to that west to sou'westerly, we don't expect too much change, and that's not really meant to happen until tonight,'' he said yesterday.

"But it's coming, don't worry, it's coming.''

Mr Lawrence said if the forecast was accurate, as much as 40cm could accumulate on the resort's skifields over the next two or three days, with unsettled weather predicted for the next five or six.

"If it comes in as scheduled ... that would be pretty good,'' he said.
