Marriott take a lunch break at the Arrowtown Bowling Club yesterday on day one of the Lakes District-hosted small museums two-day seminar.

About 30 representatives from museums and related fields from Northland to Southland are attending the seminar, which is pitched at museums employing up to seven staff.

After the lunch, participants aided digestion by bowling a few ends on the club green.

Mr Clarke said the seminar had been a regular event over the past decade and he thought that after it being hosted for the past two years at Akaroa, it was time to host it at Arrowtown.

"Day one was about interpretation design and display, because we're all trying to `wow' the audience," he said.

Today's theme would focus on the digital, with an emphasis on touch screens, 3D images, scanning and digital storage, and feature talks on oral history, energy saving and lighting, "practical stuff museum staff might want to know about, as opposed to museology and the philosophy of museums".
