In a weird quirk of the competition, the Wakatipu Premiers rugby side’s about to play back-to-back games against defending champs Alexandra — with only the result of the second game mattering.

Wakatipu, who are tracking second in the Central Otago comp, travel to Alex this Saturday to play their final round robin game.

Then, because Alex will remain third, regardless of the result, Wakatipu will host them in a semi-final the week after.

Wakatipu coach Jordan Manihera, however, says "we’re not taking [this Saturday] lightly — it would be pretty arrogant of us to think like that".

"We’ve had a weekend off rugby, and this is the most important part of the season for us, so we’re preparing as if it’s our semi-final.

"It’s a good opportunity for us to make some tweaks and hone in on stuff we’ve been doing well but could probably improve on.

"We’re not using it as a training run per se, but it’s going to give us some really good learnings for the following week."

Manihera says "we’ve got everyone pretty much back onboard, which is fantastic, but a bloody good headache to have from a coaching perspective".

Arrowtown, for their part, cooked any play-off chances they had with their 48-24 home loss to comp leaders Upper Clutha last Friday.

They did rally, however from 48-5 down to score 19 unanswered points in the last quarter.

They finish their season with a home game against Maniototo this Saturday, where a win might destroy the Maggots’ chances of making the semis.

A win for Arrowtown will also take them to four for the season, up from three last year.

Meanwhile, the Wakatipu Wanderers lost their home quarter-final against Mossburn Stags last weekend, 20-12.
