Tight security surrounds a building site at Glenorchy's Rees Valley Station where it is rumoured the sixth instalment of Mission Impossible will be filmed.

The Otago Daily Times was stopped by security staff when approaching the area near Muddy Creek on Saturday, despite being granted permission from the land owner to be on the site.

Staff appeared concerned photographs were being taken of construction work which included two wooden buildings.

There was activity at the location as two large trucks arrived with what looked to be scaffolding.

Mrs Scott's daughter, Kate, told Mountain Scene in April she was unsure of what was being filmed there.

''Everything we've seen has been under a project code that doesn't reveal much.''

Rumours are rife the blockbuster, starring Tom Cruise, will be filmed in New Zealand.
