Queenstown's public swimming pool will close for at least three months from September for a $2.3 million repair of its ceiling and ventilation improvements.

The project at the Alpine Aqualand facility, which is part of the Queenstown Events Centre in Frankton, is expected to be approved by the Queenstown Lakes District Council at its full meeting next Thursday.

All other facilities at the centre will continue to operate as normal.

Council sport and recreation manager Simon Battrick said that in addition to the ceiling repair and ventilation improvements, the opportunity would be taken to replace the linings of the lap and leisure pools, lay new flooring and carry out maintenance on the hydroslides.

"This will remove the need for our annual pool shutdown, usually held in May, for routine maintenance and a thorough clean, so the community can keep on swimming through that period.''

The timing of the proposed closure had been determined by the lead time for ordering "key items'' from overseas, Mr Battrick said.

It would coincide with the end of the school third term, at which there was a pre-planned break in the facility's swim school classes and other regular programmes.

Discussions had already taken place with regular users of the facility, including the Queenstown Swim Club and schools, he said.
