A police spokesman said emergency services were called to a Windsor Pl property about 2.30pm on Saturday.
"Police are now working to establish the full circumstances of how she died."
The death was being treated as unexplained, he said.
A resident of the street told the Otago Daily Times there was a relatively strong police presence on the street on Saturday afternoon and into the evening.
"When I drove past, there were three officers standing outside the driveway and two police cars."
They said yesterday there were two police vehicles in the driveway behind police tape.
"We almost never saw the property occupied. We used to walk past it most days and would rarely see any activity there," they said.
The police spokesman said they wanted to speak to anyone who was in the vicinity between 8am and 3pm on Saturday and might have any information.
